August 9, 2011 Meeting: Roland Moser

The Indianapolis Aero Club, welcomes our own Rollin Mosher.  Rollin was a "Hump Pilot" during WWII and will be sharing some of his experiences with us.  A little bit about "The Hump":

The Hump was the name given by Allied pilots in the Second World War to the eastern end of the Himalayan Mountains over which they flew military transport aircraft from India to China to resupply the Chinese war effort of Chiang Kai-shek and the units of the United States Army Air Forces based in China. Creating an airlift presented the USAAF a considerable challenge in 1942: it had no units trained or equipped for moving cargo, and no airfields existed in India for basing the large number of transports that would be required. Flying over the Himalayas was extremely dangerous and made more difficult by a lack of reliable charts, an absence of radio navigation aids, and a dearth of information about the weather. We will also get a report from both of our 2011 Scholarship recipients and we're hoping we get great reports like we did from last year's recipient!

November 9, 2010 Meeting Speaker: Capt. Jesse Frey

The Indianapolis Aero Club, welcomes Capt. Jesse Frey.  Capt. Frey will speak to the club about his experiences during WWII, piloting the P-51 Ain't Misbehavin', and a recent special event at our November 9 meeting.

Jesse Frey was recently honored as the Indiana Wing of the CAF and Montgomery Aviation hosted an event where Capt Frey was reunited with his crew chief, Pat Buzzeo and the P-51 P-51 Ain't Misbehavin'. (Press Release)  We'll have a slide show from that event and Capt. Frey will share his thoughts from the event also.

Dick Curtis to speak Feb 9 at Indianapolis Aero Club

The Indianapolis Aero Club will host Dick Curtis on Feb 9, 2010 at their monthly meeting. Mr. Curtis will be talking to the club about his experiences during World War II. Here is an excerpt from one write up on his book:

Book: Dumb But Lucky!: Confessions Of A P-51 Fighter Pilot In World War II - Second Lieutenant Dick Curtis arrived in Italy in May 1944- twenty years old and part of a shipment of P-51 Mustang fighter pilots so desperately needed that they were rushed into combat with less than thirty hours of flight time in their new high-performance aircraft. Six of the twelve pilots assigned to the 52nd Fighter Group were shot down in the first two weeks. By his ninth mission, Curtis was the only one still flying. A maverick, he barely escaped court-martial with his high-flying antics. Escorting bombers sent to pound heavily defended oil fields was risky enough, but strafing the enemy supply lines, ports, and airfields was even more dangerous. Curtis may chalk up his success to dumb luck, but these missions took exceptional skill and courage. This hair-raising account captures the air war in all its split-second terror and adrenaline-pumping action.
