The Indianapolis Aero Club, welcomes Bob Cedoz.

Aircraft and gas turbine engines for aircraft have a remarkable life service life. There are current product lines in service for more than 50 years. Mr. Cedoz will discuss two such engine product lines which have been designed and manufactured in Indianapolis. The model 250 has been powering helicopters since the early 1960s. The first production T56 was shipped in 1953, 50 years after the Wright flyer first flew and 16 after the whittle engine first ran. Both engine lines are still in production and will be for many more years. The discussion will include history of the engines and modern versions.

Mr. Cedoz is currently responsible for the technical excellence of the future product offerings as lead by the Indianapolis engineering team for Rolls-Royce. This includes mechanical design, cost analysis and product modeling for conceptual design of new engines and modules for improvements to current engines.

Mr. Cedoz has more than 30 years experience in engineering design with 28 years in gas turbine engine design. During this time he has been involved in the design, development, support and continuous improvement of several engine products. His background includes the design and development of the drive system for the PropFan™ demonstrator. More recently he was the Chief Design Engineer for the T56-A-427A, the advanced turboprop for the Navy’s latest Hawkeye variant, the E2-D.

The Indianapolis Aero Club, welcomes LTC Todd Lovell. LTC Lovell plans to share some more about the V-22 Osprey. While he shared a lot about the Osprey when he spoke before to our club, this time he plans to share more about how the Osprey is used in the field, including some tales about how the Osprey has been effective during recent current events.

From the Boeing website: The Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey is the first aircraft designed from the ground up to meet the needs of the Defense Department's four U.S. armed services. The tiltrotor aircraft takes off and lands like a helicopter. Once airborne, its engine nacelles can be rotated to convert the aircraft to a turboprop airplane capable of high-speed, high-altitude flight.

The Indianapolis Aero Club, welcomes our own Rollin Mosher. Rollin was a "Hump Pilot" during WWII and will be sharing some of his experiences with us. A little bit about "The Hump":

The Hump was the name given by Allied pilots in the Second World War to the eastern end of the Himalayan Mountains over which they flew military transport aircraft from India to China to resupply the Chinese war effort of Chiang Kai-shek and the units of the United States Army Air Forces based in China. Creating an airlift presented the USAAF a considerable challenge in 1942: it had no units trained or equipped for moving cargo, and no airfields existed in India for basing the large number of transports that would be required. Flying over the Himalayas was extremely dangerous and made more difficult by a lack of reliable charts, an absence of radio navigation aids, and a dearth of information about the weather. during the preceding year." For 2010, the 100th anniversary of the Trophy it is awarded to the Sikorsky X-2 team, including LHTEC, a company that Rolls-Royce is a partner.

The Indianapolis Aero Club, welcomes Marvona Welsh. Marvona will be sharing her experiences with Disabled American Veterans and how they incorprate the B-25 bomber into their program during the air show season. Press releases from last air show season give us some insight:

The DAV Airshow Outreach Program was developed to increase public awareness of disabled veterans and to serve veterans in communities across the nation. Using B-25 medium bombers, the program reminds the public of the sacrifices veterans have made and continue to make to keep our nation free.

The B-25 Bomber enjoys the reputation of achieving the impossible during one of America’s darkest hours in World War II. The medium size bomber was made famous by the daring Doolittle Raid on Tokyo which helped rally America after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The B-25 went on to become the most versatile bomber of World War II, seeing combat in every theater of operation.

January 11, 2011 Meeting: Dave Baranek, Top Gun, F-14

The Indianapolis Aero Club, welcomes Dave Baranek. Dave will be sharing his experiences during his 20 year Navy career. A better explanation of what we can expect is shared in his biography on his website:

He enjoyed a successful and satisfying 20-year career in the Navy, starting with assignments to F-14 Tomcat squadrons and the elite Topgun training program, and later assignment to the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the US 7th Fleet. At one point, he commanded an F-14 Tomcat fighter squadron, responsible for nearly 300 people and 14 aircraft worth about $700 million.

While serving as a Topgun air-to-air combat instructor in 1985, he had the unusual experience of flying aerial sequences used in the film "Top Gun," starring Tom Cruise and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson. He also served as a dialogue advisor on the project, and took some of the few available photographs of the movie's black F-5 fighters in flight. ...

On October 23, Indianapolis Executive Airport and the CAF hosted the reunion of the fully restored North American P-51 Ain’t Misbehavin' with its WWII pilot, Jesse "Dick" Frey, and his crew chief, Pat Buzzeo. It was an amazing day. About 200 people attended. The event has been captured in two different YouTube videos. Enjoy!!

Bob Bruce was 100 years old on October 5th

Bob’s last Navion

Bob Bruce was 100 years old on October 5th. He joined the Indianapolis Aero Club in 1946. We don’t have the exact date but it’s close to 65 years ago! Many of us wanted to throw a big 100th birthday party but Bob asked us to not do that. Correction; He Told us to not do that. He said “It’s just another day, as far as I’m concerned”.

Bob’s ratings include Pvt.sgl, mel, inst, glider. He has owned a variety of aircraft including Bonanza and his all time favorite Navions. Bob rejects the title ‘Indianapolis Aero Club Founder’ and technically that may be true. The Club was in fact, started in 1933 with Edward F. New as the first President. But over the years attendance slipped away and the decision was made to just shut it down. Bob said “Wait a minute. Let me work on it”. (Or words to that effect). He re-built the membership to more than 200 and has clearly earned the title of Founder. Bob continues to attend most Aero Club meetings (unless there is a clear danger of a birthday party) and demonstrates a keen interest in the club and it’s activities.

We are all indebted to Bob Bruce and are honored to have him among us.

Jack Northrop became interested in the development of the cleanest possible airplane early in his career as an aircraft designer. In 1923, as an engineer for Donald Douglas in Santa Monica, California, Northrop continually explored advanced designs for aircraft, seeking new ways to eliminate drag and the severe penalties in aircraft performance it imposed. Even then, he envisioned an airplane without protruding surfaces that did not contribute in some way to lift. He even undertook the design of a tailless, all-wing glider as a "pastime" project, but never finished the aircraft, due to other commitments and lack of funds. In 1927, Northrop designed the incomparable Lockheed Vega as the best possible compromise that could be made with known and proven elements. 'High-energy,' she
loved the outdoors

Mary Jane Fall lived a vigorous, physical
life, and she hoped others would, too.

So she taught them how. Hundreds of them
-- children in Camp Fire USA, an
organization similar to Boy Scouts and Girl
Scouts.

The Indianapolis chapter would have
folded from lack of funding in 1984 except
that Mrs. Fall and another woman, Linda
Sutton, stepped in and ran the operation as
volunteers. They did a job that had been
the responsibility of half a dozen paid
staffers.

"Mary was high-energy," Sutton said. "She
skied, she whitewater rafted. There was
nothing she couldn't do."

Mrs. Fall was killed earlier this month in a
four-wheeler accident in the mountains
outside Ouray, Colo. She was 65.

An experienced rider, she was at the
controls of a two-person ATV when the
vehicle left the trail and plummeted down a
steep incline.

Her passenger, daughter Erika Fall, is
recovering from her injuries at her
Indianapolis home.

Mary Jane Mull Fall was born into the
physical life, the daughter of a prominent
farm family in Parke County. Her
upbringing "gave her a lot of self-worth
and sense of adventure," observed her
brother-in-law, Max Fall, noting her wide-
ranging interests.

She enjoyed quintessential rural pursuits
such as cooking and 4-H crafts but also
developed a keen interest in her husband's
hobbies, which included flying and off-road
motorcycling.

She was active in the Experimental Aircraft
Association and the Indiana Warbirds

Squadron 3. She had a motorcycle license
and, well into her 60s, frequently got
around on a scooter.

She and her husband of 44 years,

Martin K. Fall, both graduated from Purdue
University. She taught school in Illinois
before marrying and moving to
Indianapolis, where they owned and
managed a manufacturing business,
General Devices.

They had two children. The eldest, Lisa,
died in a car crash in the 1980s. That "left
the biggest empty hole in her heart you
could imagine," Sutton said.

But it did not stop her or quash her bold
spirit. She devoted herself to Camp Fire,
helping keep the local chapter going for
two decades (it finally ceased operations in
2004).

She organized fundraisers and performed
other administrative tasks. But her favorite
part, Sutton said, was showing the children
the joys of the outdoors. "She and I would
take eight girls on all-night canoe trips
down Sugar Creek.

"That, to her, was living."

This year was Sheryl's second year with the Air Race Classic. She holds a Private Single-Engine Land cerification, has her instrument rating and has logged over 350 hours. Sheryl also grew up with a love for flying: her father was stationed at SAC Headquarters when her parents decided to "tie the knot". So, it is said that she was flying before she was born. For much of her father's military service, Sheryl experienced flying from the back seat of small aircraft from the aero club and listened to all the hangar flying stories while growing up. For her parents' 50th anniversary, she used her father's flight log and flew them the same route back to Omaha to see friends that still lived in the area.

Sheryl's goal is to fly one of every type of airplane in the sky and has so far logged time in Pipers, Cessnas, Maule Orion, Mooneys and most recently for the race, a Bonanza. She plans to get her Commercial rating and would like to fly corporate now that after 31yrs, she is retired from the US Postal Service in sales and customer service.

Indy Aero Club Members,

I would like you to be aware of some BIG NEWS regarding member Kaitlin Mroz and the Womens Air Race Classic 2010. This year was Kaitlin's third year participating on Purdue's team. She was one of the seniors on the ground crew.

Of all 58 participating teams regardless of class, Purdue placed 4th overall. Of all collegiate teams, Purdue WON THE COMPETITION, coming in FIRST PLACE. Purdue beat out second place collegiate Indiana State (8th place overall), third place Southern Illinois (9th place overall), and fourth place Embry Riddle (10th place overall).

She attended the closing ceremonies and awards banquet in Frederick, Maryland with other teammates and received the trophy for the team. In the press conference, the pilots credited their win to the superioir performance of the ground crew to navigate them around some pretty bad weather.

Another interesting side note, one of the pilots for Indiana State University's team who finished second of all collegiate teams, Kay Brown, has been freinds with Kaitlin for approximately 15 years as they grew up only blocks away in Avon. Kay recognized her passion to fly and took flight lessons because of Kaitlin's passion for flight. I am proud of both these young women!

Kaitlin will never brag on herself, but it is a HUGE VICTORY not only for Purdue, but for the Indy Aero Club and I believe all members will enjoy the news!

The B-25 Heart

Our picnic on August 10th yielded a number of wonderful stories and experiences. I invited my friend, Alan, that shares a love for aviation history to the picnic. Alan and I used to work at Thomson together. He pulled this lovely trinket out of his pocket and proceeded to tell me the story behind it. I asked him to write up the story in his own words. Here's the photo I took - and Alan's story:

    Sometime in late 1943 a B-25 Mitchell bomber was severely shot up over Papua New Guinea. The crew managed to get her back to the airstrip outside Buna but she never flew again. Towed to a spot alongside the runway she became a parts supply to keep the other B-25s flying.

     In early 1944 Theodore (Ted) Francoeur was at a field hospital next to the airstrip near Buna waiting to be evacuated back home. He had spent the year before with the 32nd Infantry Division, along with an Australian division, crossing the Owen Stanley Mountains on foot from Port Moresby to drive the Japanese out of Buna. That effort took the better part of a year and when it was over only 3,700 of the 15,000 men in the 32nd were left standing. Ted was at the field hospital recovering from starvation, malaria, dysentery, and a number of other jungle related ailments.

     To pass the time he did what many of the other men in the hospital did, they made little items to send back home to loved ones. In Ted’s case he took a small piece of a window from that B-25. Using a pen knife to shape it and a piece of wool to polish it he fashioned a small heart. He sent that heart to his sweetheart Ilene Summers in Michigan. When he returned home in late 1944 they married.

     The picture you see here is that heart made from a tiny piece of that B-25 Mitchell. It’s a little bit of WWII history, a little bit of the B-25’s history, and a little bit of my parent’s history.

Jon also delivered a very well prepared thank you speech, and he was kind enough to send us a copy of the speech so we could post it and share it with those unable to attend. We look forward to hearing future success stories from Jon.

How many 17 year olds do you know that can say they know what it feels like to be in microgravity?

Can say they’ve overcome their greatest fears to the point of being fearless?

Can say they’ve hand built and lithium hydroxide canister out of spare parts on an international space station?

Have breathed underwater?

Have made the greatest friends of their lives… most not even from this country?

Have their eyes opened up to a point beyond belief- to be open minded and respectful of cultures they never thought of before?

Have built a rocket, a fireproof shield, a couple parachutes, an unbreakable bridge- all with household materials?

Have felt 4 g’s of force on their body?

Have found their passion that they’ve never thought they would ever be passionate about?

How many do you know?

Ok, now how many do you know did it all in 7 days? Well, now you know one.

When I was told about this space camp thing, I had no idea what I was in for. I was never much of a space nerd, watched Star Wars but never was obsessed, and embarrassingly have only seen the new Star Trek movie without watching any of those shows. When I saw the stars, I saw stars. When I saw a space shuttle- I thought that’s cool.

I pulled up to the gate with my dad, and they asked us- “Are you here for international space camp week?”. “No, just regular space camp”. Apparently I was signed up for the International week- which I discovered later to be the greatest week they offer. I was in a group named after the scientist Von Tiessenhausen. 6 of us were from the US. The other 11 were from places like Belgium, Costa Rica, Turkey, Latvia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, and a few others.

Each of them had a completely different global perspective. None of them knew what an oreo was. They taught me how to speak French, how to cuss in Turkish, and how to write in Cyrillic. I taught them what a tater tot was, where Indiana is on a map, and what a squirrel looks like.

But regardless of our backgrounds, we all went through an experience that shaped our minds, our goals, our perspectives in a completely new light. In the day we would go to briefings about how to operate the space shuttle, the history of the space program, and how to survive in space. Each day we had a one hour mission.

My track was the mission specialist track. For the first mission I was on ground control, Eva officer. I would communicate to the shuttle on how to build different structures. Second mission I was the shuttle mission specialist. I was placed on this harness or chair of some sort, and built structures on the microgravity wall. Of course I probably had a little more fun than I was supposed to when I stomped on the floor and flew to the top of the building. The third and fourth mission I was on the
space station, where I conducted experiments like chemical rxns that form flubber. Or program a small robotic arm to take out test tubes pour them and place them back all while solving problems like rapid Oxygen depletion, water purification, and solar flares that were affecting the station.

On the day before graduation, we had our EDM- a 6 hour mission. I started out on the shuttle as we were launched, we docked with the station, and then came home. All the while we had our duties to do like conducting experiments, fix satellites by moving a giant robotic arm that held up a girl all with the control of a joystick, deal with astronauts getting sick by contacting the flight doctor at ground control, and handle all the physical anomolies that went wrong with the shuttle and the station like contacting Houston to help build a LiOH canister to filter out the CO2 levels on the station.

One example was when the entire crew except me and the commander were simulated to be severely sick. During this time the plumbing was out, the power was out, and there was a leak in the cabin. I learned in this moment that the one thing I was very good at was thinking on my toes. We had to diagnose and fix all the medical anomolies, while purging the fuel cells sealing up the leak and programming the plumbing back to normal all in a matter of about half an hour. End result: Mission successful.

When were not in mission prep or in the actual missions you may have found our team at the leadership reaction course, which I’m sure a bunch of pilots know very well what kind of tasks you have to complete in those. Crossing 17 people safely with 2 two by fours from one platform to the next, or through a matrix of cinderblocks, our team ended up with the fastest times compared with the rest of Space Camp. In that area I overcame the greatest of my fears when they presented us with a giant telephone pole (32 feet high) and said climb all the way to the top and jump off. We had pulleys and ropes, but they also said climb only what you’re comfortable then go one more step. I just wanted
to touch the top, but somehow my team and all the support behind me pushed me to go to the very top. The biggest surprise of my life. And I did it. The most terrifying thing I’ve ever done. The zipline the next day was not a problem, because I had become absolutely fearless.

And so in conclusion, July 24 to July 30, 2010 may very well be not only some of the fondest days of my life so far, but perhaps the most important. Because now when I look at the stars I don’t see just stars. I see a place of no fear and of no bounds. A place that I’d like to be. And for that I am forever grateful. Thank you so much with that opportunity. It was truly amazing.

Bio: Roger Bitzer –Executive Director – Grissom Air Museum (EAA-1024987)

After retiring from Mitsubishi Electric Corp., Roger Bitzer enlisted his time as a volunteer at the Grissom Air Museum . He was instrumental in assembling the Museum’s latest acquisition a TA-4J Navy Skyhawk. Bitzer was able to locate two of the pilots that flew the museum’s TA-4J and last May invited the last assigned pilot to give a talk at Montgomery Aviation’s hangar at Grissom RAFB.

Bitzer is currently with an all volunteer team that is restoring a 1946 Piper J3 Cub. The Cub (N98788) was based out of Shank Airport (near Indianapolis ) and was used by the “Bottom & Lamb” flying school.

After the Executive Director resigned to accept another position Bitzer volunteered to assume the Director’s responsibilities until a new director could be found.

In 1965 Bitzer was a radioman on a P-2V “Neptune” that was a support aircraft in the drone operations of the “ Atlantic Fleet Weapons Range ”. Later he because involved with the launch & recovery of F-9J “Cougar” target drones.

He was stationed at Roosevelt Roads Naval Air Station, Puerto Rico.

Lieutenant Colonel John Klatt, Pilot

As a child growing up in Duluth, Minnesota, John Klatt dreamed of learning to fly. And thanks to the Air National Guard, he’s now living the dream as one of the top aerobatic pilots in the country, for the ANG’s “Guarding America, Defending Freedom” aerobatic team.

As the youngest of seven children, John did his early flying by chasing around the house trying to be a part of whatever his older brothers and sisters were up to. He quickly learned that; toy airplanes do not flush well, bee catching is risky business, and dogs pretty much eat anything. However, his favorite pastime was listening to his aircraft mechanic Father’s aviation stories and dreaming about the day when he would be able to fly.

John got his first “hands on” experience in aviation by washing airplanes to earn money for flying lessons. He spent his summers pumping gas to pay for flying lessons, earned his private pilot ratings and graduated from the University of Minnesota.

He has flown a wide variety of aircraft. His commission in the ANG gave him the opportunity to fly C-130 military transports delivering crucial supplies during Operation Desert Storm. John later transitioned from the C-130 into the F-16 “Fighting Falcon” and has completed three combat tours flying F-16’s in Iraq. John has logged more than 2,000 hours at the controls of the F-16, and is assigned to the 148th Fighter Wing in Duluth, MN.

Along with his military career, John began actively training for the long and difficult journey toward becoming a professional aerobatic performer. He was drawn to the world of aerobatics because of the high-degree of concentration and mental toughness it requires. He is a top performer in unlimited class aerobatics, and is recognized as one of the top ten unlimited class aerobatic pilots in the United States.

A Celebration of Life for Eddie G. Marlen 88 will be held this Thursday evening,

May 6, 7:00 - 8:30 pm at the Post Air Military Heritage Museum (7L8) Hangar.

Ed was a long time member of EAA and Chapter 900.
Ed served our country in the U.S. Navy, and later earned his pilot's license.
He was an instrument rated SEL, SES pilot and a member of the Quiet Birdmen.
His aviation passions included a Globe Swift 48 Temco Swift Airplane, PA-28.

Ed is survived by his wife Rusty, daughter Cindy Easper, sons James and Roger and grandchildren.

Morning race, free Gin Blossoms concert, "glow," fireworks highlight busy day May 8

INDIANAPOLIS, Wednesday, May 5, 2010 - Paying honor to the traditional starting field of 33 cars for the annual Indianapolis 500 Mile Race, a field of 33 balloons and pilots is set for the Centennial Era Balloon Festival presented by AT&T on Saturday, May 8 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Hot air balloon pilots hailing from 12 states, stretching from California to New Jersey, will launch from the IMS infield in both corporate-sponsored and unsponsored "sport" balloons. Indiana is well-represented with 13 pilots vying for prize money and the prestige associated with winning at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Several balloons have notable ties to the Speedway. The Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation, founded by Indianapolis 500 veteran and Firestone Indy Lights/Indianapolis 500 team owner Sam Schmidt, sponsors the balloon piloted by Al Hansen of Winamac, Ind. Hansen's balloon has a wheelchair-accessible balloon, and Hansen gives rides throughout the year to guests with disabilities. Schmidt and his two children will fly with Hansen Saturday.

Centennial Era Balloon Festival presenting sponsor AT&T is represented with two balloons for 2010, and popular Bloomington, Ind., wine destination Oliver Winery will have two balloons plus a wine tasting station near the Pagoda Plaza.

The pilots will compete in the Founders Race, scheduled for a 7:30 a.m. (ET) launch on May 8. Although the IMS infield will be closed at that time due to the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon, fans can watch the balloons ascend from numerous points outside the IMS grounds.

IMS welcomes the public to walk among the balloons in the Speedway's infield at the Centennial Era Balloon Festival presented by AT&T balloon "glow" Saturday night. With free admission and a concert by popular rock band the Gin Blossoms, followed by the "glow" at 8 p.m. and fireworks at 9:15 p.m., the evening will be filled with entertainment for all ages.

Fans should enter IMS via Gate 9A, located on Georgetown Road just north of 25th Street. Gates open at 5 p.m., with wine tasting courtesy of Oliver Winery, balloons courtesy of "Matt the Balloon Guy" and other attractions opening at the same time. Live music begins at 5:15.

If the Founders Race is rained out on Saturday morning, the race will be rescheduled for Sunday, May 9 at 7:30 a.m. The IMS Grounds will be open via Gate 2 (the main gate/tunnel on 16th Street) and accessible as far as the Hall of Fame Museum parking lot.

You can see the aircraft restoration process first-hand by participating in the Behind the Scenes Tours at the National Museum of the United States Air Force.

Registration for Behind the Scenes Tours during the months of June through August 2010 opens on Monday, May 3. The free tours take place every Friday from 12:15 p.m. to 3 p.m. Space is limited, so advance registration is required.

During the tours, members of the public are guided through the museum's restoration hangars located on the historic Wright Field flight line in Area B of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, about one mile from the main museum building. Visitors will see a variety of aircraft in several stages of the restoration process, including the RQ-1 Predator and the famous World War II bombers, B-17F Memphis Belle and B-17D The Swoose.

Below is a letter that was distributed last month that gives some details about the school:

On August 2, 2010, the second high school in the country devoted entirely to aviation and aerospace will open in Indianapolis. The Indiana Aerospace Junior/Senior High School, a charter school sponsored by the Mayor of Indianapolis, will join the Aviation High School in Des Moines, WA as schools that offer students strong preparation in science, technology, engineering, and math with a focus on aviation and aerospace.

Students will earn a Core 40 with academic honors diploma with opportunities to take dual credit courses. Dual credit courses are college courses that apply to both college and high school requirements. Students will be able to explore and specialize in such areas as pilot, air traffic controller, aviation administration, aviation mechanics, logistics, aerospace engineering, safety and security, and healthcare.

Through partnerships with the Challenger Learning Center in the MSD Decatur Township, Indiana State University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Rolls Royce, Republic Airways, and other organizations, students will have opportunities outside of the classroom. These opportunities include mentoring and internships. Students will also have the opportunity to become licensed pilots.

The school will open in August 2010 with an initial class of 7th grade. A grade will be added each year until the school covers grades 7-12. Seventh graders will take one year of math, science, English/language arts, social studies, and reading/study skills and one semester each of health/physical education, music, art, and technology education. Average class size will be 23 students. As a public charter school, there is no tuition and transportation will be provided.

April 2010 - Meeting Summary

We were happy to see quite a few visitors at the April meeting. Our speaker, Billy Werth, invited John Fleck, who took most of the amazing photos Billy showed us during his presentation, and Tibor Beirbaum from Ft Wayne; Michele Stark and the Kohr's, Roland and Jan, all from Bloomington were guests of Jim Stark; and Austin Bayless from Indianapolis was a guest of Bob Campbell. Michael and Colin Oberthur were back as well.

Many commented at the end of the evening that they really enjoyed Billy's presentation. It was a pleasure to hear Billy speak about growing up around the Air Force (his father was a B-52 pilot) and share how he became interested in aerobatics after his training at Indiana State University. We appreciated how Billy presented the mix of commercial, military and aerobatic flying that has brought him to this point in his career. Not only was his presentation entertaining, but we all seamed to walk away with a little more appreciation of one our newest members: Billy Werth.

We're looking forward to hearing more about Billy in the future. We'll keep an eye on his website (Grayout Aerosports LLC) so we know what he is up to, and we all wish him continued success in his career and through the remainder of this air show season. Oh, and we can't wait to hear a few more stories at future meetings when he's able to join us!

Dr. Henry Shirmer Riley

Dr. Henry Shirmer Riley had been a member of the Indianapolis Aero Club for more than 25 years. He was born on September 19, 1928 in Wheatley, Kentucky and passed away on April 19, 2010. He died with his beloved Comanche 250 - N5425P in a southern Indiana accident.

Shirmer Riley’s first flying lesson was May 11, 1945 in a Piper J3 Cub . During his senior year at Wheatley High School (as the only senior most of the time) he was able to slip away during study hall and get in a half hour, or so, solo. By graduation, he had accumulated a total of 18 hours.

Shirmer and Janis set up housekeeping in 1946 and after two children he went back to college. In 1960, Dr. Henry Shirmer Riley graduated from the University of Louisville Medical School. After internship at the medical center in Columbus, Georgia, he returned to practice in Madison, Indiana. During these years and until 1973 Dr. Riley was able to rent and share ownership in a variety of aircraft. In 1973 he purchased the Comanche 250 and flew it for 37 years.

On July 14, 2009, Dr. Riley (right, below) and his close friend, Jim Pirtle were the featured speakers at the Indianapolis Aero Club meeting. They told of their trip to the Malta Air Rally, via the Ice Cap and the North Atlantic route. In fact, they were the first Americans to do so. They have actually flown the Atlantic three times and were guests at the Paris Air Show.

The big story, of course, was their flight around the world. It’s all spelled out in their new book, ‘Two Pilots – One Engine – In Their Own Words’.

Dr. Henry Shirmer Riley, you have done what most other pilots only dream of doing.

Thank you! We’ll miss you.

AS Ron mentioned in the meeting last night, here is the write-up from the Indianapolis Star on Rene Defourneaux. Rene spoke to us just last year!

Rene' Julian Defourneaux Sr. Passed away April 1, 2010 after living a brilliant life. He was born on April 29, 1921 in Lebetain, France. Rene' may be gone, but his legend will live on for a very long time. He is

survived by his wife, partner and best friend, Virginia Ruth Edds Defourneaux. His six children and nine grandchildren who live in six different states and two European countries also survive him. Family and friends all over the world will miss Rene'. While a young man, Rene' emigrated to the United States with his mother, Emilie and his sister, Marcelle, in order for them to join his father, Ernest in New Jersey. Rene' was very proud to have been naturalized as an American citizen and he was proud to serve in the Army's Office of Strategic Services during World War II. He devoted over twenty years of his life to the United States Army both in Europe and parachuting behind the lines and in Southeast Asia, working with Ho Chi Minh to offer resistance help against communism in the region. He was definitely a member of the greatest generation. During Rene's lifetime, his vocations and avocations could be listed as: artist, bread baker extraordinaire, smuggler, tool and die maker, photographer, carpenter, spy, private detective, coin and stamp collector, importerexporter, author, raconteur and public speaker. His stories are captivating and historical and he has written and published four books. Rene' loved technology and in the early 90's was among the first of his peers to have a computer and use an email address. To this day he has had his own website, defourneaux.com. In recent years, he could be found using Skype on his computer to talk and see distantly located family members and friends. Rene' loved and enjoyed promoting his adopted city of Indianapolis. He was a dedicated Kiwanian and won many awards for perfect attendance and as a bell ringer for the Salvation Army. He was honored to be a member of the Indianapolis Literary Society and various military organizations and was also an active member of the All Souls Unitarian Church of Indianapolis. In lieu of flowers and in honor of Rene', donations may be made to the All Souls Unitarian Church Foundation, Kiwanis of Indianapolis Abe Lincoln Scholarship Program or Community Home Health Services Hospice. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia. There will be a memorial service held at the All Souls Unitarian Church on East 56th Street in Indianapolis on Friday, April 16, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Care and arrangements have been entrusted to the Leppert Mortuary, Nora Chapel 740 E. 86th Street, Indianapolis.

Pilot Bio:
Billy Werth: Growing up in an Air Force family, Billy has been around some sort airplane his whole life. He started flying in 1988 and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Professional Aviation Technology from Indiana State University in 1994. In 1992 he started teaching aerobatics and has been hooked ever since.
In 1997 he graduated from Undergraduate Pilot Training and started flying for the Air Force Reserves out of Grissom Air Reserve Base, IN where he is an Instructor Pilot on the KC-135R Aerial Refueler. He is a veteran of Operation Northern and Southern Watch, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom. He was part of the initial bomber strike on the opening of the Iraqi war staged out of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. He was hired by Chautauqua Airlines in 2001 and is a Captain on the Embraer 145, based in Indianapolis. Billy has over 8000 hours of flight time in 20 different aircraft, with 900 of it teaching folks how to fly upside down.

March's meeting found us listening intently to Rob Reider tell us about the "Good, the Bad and the Ugly" of the air show business. Some stories were sad as we remembered some performers who have graced the skies. Rob presents well and he also had us laughing real hard at times. Rob showed us videos of his flights with the Blue Angels and was even humble enough to let us see the part where the G's were just a bit much and he, um, .... "went a little blank" on us.

We also learned there is a difference between the cadence that a "The Boss" of the US demo teams and that of the United Kingdom team, the Red Arrows, uses during an air show.
Blue Angels: "A little more power....a ....little ... more..." Then Rob stepped back from the mic and .....
Red Arrows: "MORE POWER NOW"

Well, it doesn't work as well in print. If you were there, then you are at least chuckling again with the memory.

Once again, thank you Rob Reider for carving a night out of your busy schedule and coming to visit us in Indianapolis!

We recognized our visitors at the meeting, but we'd like to acknowledge them once more, and thank them for visiting us this month: Jack Hansen of Clermont, Jim Leslie of Indianapolis, and Colin and Michael Oberthur of Indianapolis. Michael was kind enough to send an email thanking the club for the hospitality showed to him and Colin. Rob was kind enough to spend some time with Michael and Colin after the presentation, and even took time out take a picture with Colin.

Rob Reider - air show announcer, recipient of the coveted ICAS "Sword of Excellence," entertainer, pilot, Midwest television personality, singer, performer, writer, and winner of 5 Emmy awards has put all his experience into bringing the excitement of air shows “up close and personal” to audiences all over the country. 2010 marks Rob's 32nd year as an announcer and his 5th as a full-time air show announcer.

At the International Council of Air Shows 2007 convention in Las Vegas, Rob became the 34th recipient of the ICAS "Sword of Excellence," the highest award an air show professional can receive.

He's recognized by pilots around the country as the on-camera host for Sporty's Pilot Shops pilot training videos.

While still a college student in Cincinnati, Rob began work as a singer and co-host of a live, daily talk-variety show that was broadcast in 4 cities in the Midwest.

During his 13-year career there he won 5 Emmy awards for his on-air performance and musical compositions. Over the years he appeared as a soloist with the famed Cincinnati Pops Orchestra and has sung both "The Star Spangled Banner" and "O Canada" for many air shows and major league baseball games.

In 1979 his television work took him to the Dayton Air Show and he immediately became a volunteer. By 1990 Rob was the "color announcer," working with award-winning announcers Bill Bordeleau and Danny Clisham. He learned from the best in the business.

Rob began to work on the "air show circuit" and has been a member of ICAS for 15 years. ICAS has also recognized his talent by asking him to be the master of ceremonies for the final night convention "Chairman's Banquet" for nine of the last ten years."

February 2009 - Meeting Summary

Braving the weather for the February meeting was very rewarding as we heard Dick Curtis tell us some of his experiences flying P-51 Mustangs during World War II. Mr. Curtis had all of our attention as he talked about the strafing runs he was assigned to. He also shared that the Tusakagee Airmen of the 332nd Fighter Group were just down the road from where he was stationed in Italy. While sharing some somber moments that only those who have experienced in WWII can really share, he also had us laughing as he shared his great sense of humor (none of us are convinced the designers of the P-51 meant for the scoop to be used corn harvesting!)

Below are some the pictures Dick Curtis shared during his presentation. Additionally, links are provided at the bottom of this post for the books Mr. Curtis has authored and offered at our meeting. To Haley Norwood – thank you for your assistance in making the arrangements for Mr. Curtis to speak to us and transporting to and from our meeting. Distance learning: "When I think of distance learning it's the internet that comes to mind. I'm sure there must be some Open University stuff on TV these days, but I never seem to stumble across it, or its seventies style lecturers.

So what's this? This DC-6 was operated by Purdue University, it took off, lowered its TV transmission antenna and loitered while broadcasting educational programs.

I'm told the crew had access to parachutes, just in case the antenna failed to retract for landing!

The Indianapolis Aero Club has lost one of it’s most faithful members. Rolland “Tack” Nail died this week following surgery to help him swallow. Tack was President of The Indianapolis Aero Club for the years 1987 and 1988. He was an avid and active pilot until vision problems forced him to quit in his early 80s.

Tack’s standard greeting “It’s not my fault, I didn’t do it and I’m not going to do it again” always came with a laugh. Not known to ever speak poorly of anyone, it was always “great guy” or “great gal”. And he always had a smile even when he didn’t feel like it.

Rolland “Tack” Nail will be long and fondly remembered by officers and members of the Indianapolis Aero Club.

Dick Curtis to speak Feb 9 at Indianapolis Aero Club

The Indianapolis Aero Club will host Dick Curtis on Feb 9, 2010 at their monthly meeting. Mr. Curtis will be talking to the club about his experiences during World War II. Here is an excerpt from one write up on his book:

Book: Dumb But Lucky!: Confessions Of A P-51 Fighter Pilot In World War II - Second Lieutenant Dick Curtis arrived in Italy in May 1944- twenty years old and part of a shipment of P-51 Mustang fighter pilots so desperately needed that they were rushed into combat with less than thirty hours of flight time in their new high-performance aircraft. Six of the twelve pilots assigned to the 52nd Fighter Group were shot down in the first two weeks. By his ninth mission, Curtis was the only one still flying. A maverick, he barely escaped court-martial with his high-flying antics. Escorting bombers sent to pound heavily defended oil fields was risky enough, but strafing the enemy supply lines, ports, and airfields was even more dangerous. Curtis may chalk up his success to dumb luck, but these missions took exceptional skill and courage. This hair-raising account captures the air war in all its split-second terror and adrenaline-pumping action.

The event will be held in a large heated hanger off the main terminal building of Montgomery Aviation at the Indianapolis Executive Airport.

Tickets are $75/couple or $40/person include a finely catered dinner, cash bar and dancing to the swing and big band music of the 16 piece and vocalist "StarLighters". Benefit

Proceeds from the event benefit the Indiana wing of the CAF. The Indiana Wing maintains and flies a World War II primary trainer aircraft, a PT-26 Cornell & L-2A Stintson, to airshows around Indiana, educating the public and honoring the men and women of WWII, who built, serviced and flew military aircraft in defense of our great nation. Nationwide, the CAF maintains 150 flying historic combat aircraft, the world's largest collection.

Airports make the case they're worth the state funding

Industry leaders hope report of economic impact will help deter planned funding cuts

Would Boone County have landed the Medco pharmaceutical facility without a general aviation airport close by?
Or would the distribution centers, hotels and retailing with thousands of jobs have grown in Plainfield and the Ameriplex business parks if Indianapolis International Airport wasn't next door?
Maybe.
However, aviation industry leaders think the availability of airports is crucial in the mix of reasons why companies chose one site over another for a new business.
An economic impact study recently made public by the Aviation Association of Indiana shows the 104 airports open to the public give a multibillion-dollar punch to the state's economy each year. And aviation industry leaders hope the newest report will encourage lawmakers in the coming session of the Indiana General Assembly to spend a little more and match federal grants for airport improvements, ultimately creating local jobs.
"I realize that money will be tight with the state. Funding has been cut for the aviation division of the Indiana Department of Transportation, which affects the state money available to match federal grants. But with airport revenues down and property tax limits becoming effective, federal grants are a great way to bring money and jobs to the state," said Bart Giesler, executive director of the state aviation association.
"What we're talking about is every dollar from the state can bring $39 in federal funds" for airport construction that ultimately encourages businesses to create jobs, Giesler said.
The state aviation association, representing airport operators and others in the industry, estimates Indiana airports had an economic impact in their communities totaling $5.2 billion in 2007, the most recent year for which statistics are compiled.
The industry trade group's 12th biennial report estimates the direct and indirect impact of airport economic activity totaled $3.2 billion in 2007.
That includes payroll of $640 million for about 17,100 airport workers, plus operating and capital spending on the facilities. The study estimates some of those dollars are circulated locally for an additional impact of $1.4 billion.
The study estimates $600 million was saved in transportation costs because travelers and companies had local airports close by and didn't have to drive farther to get to an airport.
The total impact of Indiana airports of $5.2 billion in 2007 is up from $4.9 billion in the previous study, based on 2005 figures.
Some of the increase is attributed to the impact of dollars spent on construction at Indianapolis International Airport, Giesler said.
The next association report might show the recession has dimmed aviation's punch for Indiana. Air passenger travel is down 9.1 percent, and cargo weights are down about 14 percent this year at Indianapolis International.
In fiscal year 2009, Giesler said, Indiana's public airports -- not counting the 400 private airfields -- completed almost $80 million in construction projects. About $9.2 million of that total was at Indianapolis International.
Federal grants pay for about 95 percent of many projects at local airports. The state has contributed 2.5 percent, and local governments or the airport operators chip in the other 2.5 percent. Planned budget cuts would trim the state's share to about 1.25 percent, meaning less matching money would be available, or approximately half of the $1.38 million spent last year by the state to leverage federal grants.
"That's why we say that it would be hard to find a better rate of return for the state's investment," Giesler said.
Dan Montgomery, operator of Indianapolis Executive Airport, said that airport has made about $8 million in improvements in the past several years, including a new terminal and a canopy to shelter passengers boarding and leaving their planes. Other improvements were made to the runway and the safety and light systems.
All are perks that have made the facility north of Zionsville in Boone County, but owned by Hamilton County, a favorite with business executives.
At least 20 private jets are based there, and it is used by companies settling in the region, including the Boston-based planes operated by pharmacy company Medco, Montgomery said.
The investment and upgrades at Executive Airport, some of it matched with 2.5 percent funding from the state, created an estimated $87.99 million in annual economic impact, according to the state association's newest estimate.
Montgomery, who also manages Frankfort Municipal Airport, said any loss of state funding would ripple through small-town airfields more seriously.
"Frankfort is applying for federal funds for a new taxiway next year, but they may have to forgo that project if the state match isn't available. When you're talking $1.6 million for a project, the local match begins to add up, and it becomes very difficult when the cities are strapped."

While Dave Graf entertained us at the piano we enjoyed each others company, shared holiday plans, and told stories about our loneliest Christmas - to honor those serving our country away from home this Holiday Season.

2010 AVIATION CAMP SCHOLARSHIP

The Indianapolis AERO Club will be awarding one EAA aviation camp scholarship for the summer of 2010. The EAA Air Academy sponsored camp will be held in two sessions (July 20-28, 2010 and July 30-Aug10, 2010) at Oshkosh, WI., which overlap the world’s largest fly-in, the annual Oshkosh EAA “Airventure”. This scholarship includes all food and lodging costs of the aviation camp. Transportation to and from the camp is the responsibility of the winning candidate’s parents.

At camp the winning candidate can expect to learn:

Fundamentals of flight
Flight controls and systems
Navigation and weather
Flight training requirements
Aircraft construction basics
Hands-on techniques of builders
Flight history
Fly simulators
Visit the EAA museum

The candidate may possibly even fly with an instructor.

Candidates must be 16-18 years old during the 2010 summer. The candidate should not have attended the aviation camp in any prior year. He or she must be in good health. The winning candidate will be selected based on three selection criteria:

Interest and existing experience in the field of aviation,
Recommendations from teachers, clergy, EAA members, etc.,
School course grades for the Aug-Dec 2009 semester and overall GPA.

A 1-2 page letter describing your background and interest in aviation,

Aviation "television" with ASB.TV

Every once in a while something new comes along that makes you sit back and say 'wow!' This is one of those times. With ASB.TV, you get a wide variety of aviation content in a user interface that is like no other I have seen.

First, the content: ASB.TV has a collection of videos that are stunning. This is not low quality amateur stuff - these videos and animations are professional grade in both production quality and subject matter. You'll find airshow and air racing video, historic movies, animations, and more. Here's an example:

The videos are compelling and by themselves could be reason enough for an entire website. But, as they say, there's more. ASB.TV also has photographs, a forum, and a store where you can purchase merchandise. There's lots to see and do here.

Now for the user experience: This site lives within something they developed called Black Box, which is pretty unique. Think of a box or a cube with six sides. By navigating to the right or left, or up or down, you expose different sides of the box which then become your desktop. Within a side of the box, you can have a number panels that hold the content, be it a video player, the forum, or anything else, and these can be rearranged or resized to suit your need. I think of it as little worlds of content that you customize as you go along.

Black Box runs on top of Adobe Air, the same thing powering TweetDeck and other applications. If you don't have it yet, you will after the installation process. That process also involves installing the ASB application on your computer. Now, I know what you're thinking. I also resist installing 'stuff' that just clutters up my PC. Well, this is different. Just do it and you'll see why.

So just who is ASB? Well ASB is Air Show Buzz. They were founded in 2006 to 'deliver the exhilarating aviation lifestyle to millions of consumers worldwide by providing top flight content, thrilling live events, consumer products, social networking and a community that connects a worldwide shared passion for flight and a fearless approach towards life.' Talk about a high bar! Well, I'd say they're rockin' so far.

Metro Airport stays put

Hamilton County - After four years, the Indianapolis Airport Authority is pulling the plug on a plan for Fishers to relocate Indianapolis Metropolitan Airport. It's a major economic disappointment for the town that hoped Metro's prime acreage would attract a billion dollars in re-development.
Rejected by Noblesville and vigorously opposed by Madison County, Fishers spent four years and $150,000 on a feasibility study in an effort to relocate and expand Indianapolis Metropolitan Airport. But on Thursday, the town said that that effort is over.
"I think we looked at it as an opportunity that would have been great had it come to fruition. I think it's something you have to accept as the way things are given the current economic state of affairs," said Dan Henke, Fishers Town Council.
Built in 1967 and owned by the Indianapolis Airport Authority, Metro is considered a reliever airport for Indianapolis International, used mostly by pilots of small single engine planes. The airport authority agreed to move Metro if Fishers could find a suitable new site. The last best hope was 4,000 acres in southwest Madison County, a plan that ran afoul of property owners who formed a group called the No Fly Zone.
"What we need there is a good, economic, tax paying base for all of Madison county and this would not have been it," said Susan Campbell, a member of No Fly Zone.
While it's a victory for opponents, it's a disappointment for Fishers, which envisioned a billion dollars' worth of development on its last, prime piece of real estate.
Fishers says the 445-acre development would have generated millions of dollars in taxes. But with the airport authority now saying that the time has passed, Metro will stay where it is, as it is.
The airport authority meets Friday and will likely reverse a four-year-old agreement with Fishers to move Metro.

Lt. Col. Todd Lovell with Sam Lazerov. Todd, now Avionics Department Manager for Raytheon Avionics served 21 years on active duty in the U. S. Air Force. His last assignment was commander of the first Osprey squadron. His presentation was rather informal, very informative and very interesting. The questions and answers would have gone on all night if our leader had not put an end to it. A great meeting, Todd! Thank you so much.

Dick Egan (on the left) put together the slate of officers and board members for the next couple of years. You will see a lot of Doug Wagner (on the right) because he will be our president beginning the first of the year. Doug is an experienced meeting manager, having been associated with the Scientech Club for many years.

Roger Bishop (on the left) will be our new Vice President. Roger is with Channel 13 and is the General Manager of the Indianapolis Air Show. He has a wealth of

new and great ideas to help re-invigorate the Indianapolis Aero Club. On Roger’s left is Mike Souders and his wife Debbie. Mike is working with Sam Lazerov developing meeting plans. We are hearing rumors about a full year meeting calendar.

New member, Don Alsop came with Bill King. Don was an Aero Club member in the past and attended when he was not in China or Canada or Oklahoma or some other exotic destination. It will be good to have him back.

USS Indianapolis Radio Room

As one of my hobbies, I help with emergency communications at several local events such as marathons, 500 Festival Parade, etc. I am a ham, and my call is KC9MTL.

One of the local radio clubs I belong to is the oldest in the country, established and meeting continuously since 1914. A group of members of this club have recreated, as close as they can, the radio room of the USS Indianapolis. It has been a labor of love for the folks involved in putting the project together. There have been donations of equipment from all over the United States. Once people found out the needs, it has been amazing to see the kindness people have shown. One transmitter donated was still in the original oak crate from the 1940s, never opened or used. It was in absolute mint condition. Another donated piece of equipment weighing 800 or so pounds was shipped across country at no charge. Check out the website www.ussindyradio.org to see pictures of this fabulous project.

The open house to unveil this newest permanent exhibit at the Indiana War Memorial is November 7th. Anyone in the downtown Indianapolis area are invited to stop by from 2-5 p.m. This is a wonderful tribute to the men of the USS Indy, both the survivors and the the ones who died at sea. If you want to learn more of the story of what has been called the worst naval disaster in US history, the book In Harm’s Way by Doug Stanton is a riveting chronicle of what the men endured. I am reading it now, and it is well worth your time.

Harry C. Block Jr. Harry was born in Indianapolis, IN on November 10, 1916 to Mabel S. and Harry C. Block, Sr. who preceded him in death. He peacefully passed away on Saturday, July 4th, surrounded by his wife of 51 years, Tirzah Blackard Block, his daughter, Barbara Austin, his loving son-in-law Jim Austin, and granddaughters, Lexi and Claire. Harry, known as Harry Jr, HCB, Brud, Daddy, Dad and Papa, had lived many chapters in his life. He grew up primarily in Indianapolis, but enjoyed time in Pittsburgh (Squirrel Hill he'd tell you), Culver Military Academy, Miami Beach (he always debated as to whether he should have accepted the journalist job with the Miami Herald), and back to Indianapolis, where he remained a lifelong resident. He was a veteran of WWII. His life was enriched by family, friends, and acquaintances from his youth, the Culver years, Block's department store, Block's Bicycle Shop, years of collecting aviation history, Indy Aero Club, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and his church. He lived his life with passion, commitment and devotion to the people and activities that he enjoyed. While he took great pride in his world class aviation collection and Indy 500 memorabilia, what really mattered to him was family. The grandson of department store founder William H. Block, he was the Block family historian preserving and passing down stories, photos and traditions. On any given day you could find him lunching downtown with a circle of buddies, cheering at his granddaughters' dance or school activities, or just shooting the breeze and reminiscing about the good old days with anyone who would listen. And while everyone knew Harry through different channels, they were all in agreement that he was one of a kind! The last two years of his life were a courageous and amazing attempt to defeat the health battle of his life. The family expresses sincere gratitude and appreciation to the healthcare team who supported him, including Nurse Jeannette and Aid Monica, Drs. Harris, Shirrell, Lee, and Rouch, Hospice Nurses Tracie and Jeannette and Hospice Aids LaDonna and LaRita, and care giving angel Kim. In addition to his wife Tirzah and daughter Barbara and her family, survivors include daughters Wendy E. Hiltz (Bob), San Luis Obispo, CA, and Debby McCombs (Herman), Kokomo, IN, 5 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. There will be a celebration of life to pay tribute to this self-proclaimed iconoclast. Please join the family in honoring Harry on Wednesday, July 8th at the Sterrett Center, at Ft. Harrison, 8950 Otis Ave. Beginning at 12 noon, the family will welcome guests. The service will begin at 2:00 p.m. For better, for worse, in sickness and in health, Harry's ultimate desire was for Tirzah to be cared for. To honor his wishes in lieu of flowers, the family has established the Tirzah B. Block Alzheimer's Long Term Care Fund. Contributions can be made to this fund at any Chase Bank location. Arrangements have been entrusted to Shirley Brothers Mortuary.

Famed Tuskegee Airmen to be honored; Three-Volley Salute added to solemn ceremonies

INDIANAPOLIS, Wednesday, May 20, 2009 - The Indianapolis Motor Speedway will continue its longstanding tradition of honoring America's military veterans during the pre-race ceremonies for the Indianapolis 500 with an expanded variety of tributes, including special recognition of a unique group of American heroes and a dramatic flyover.

Pre-race ceremonies for the Indianapolis 500 are scheduled to start at noon (ET) Sunday, May 24, with "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" starting at 1 p.m.

Among the veterans of America's armed forces to be honored will be nine members of the famed Tuskegee Airmen.

The Tuskegee Airmen enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II to become America's first African-American military airmen. They trained at the Tuskegee Army Air Field in Tuskegee, Ala., and compiled an exemplary record in combat service despite numerous acts of bigotry and racism committed against them at home and overseas.

From 1941-46, 994 African-American pilots trained for combat at the Tuskegee Army Air Field. Hundreds more trained at other bases to serve as navigators, bombardiers and gunnery crews during the worldwide war effort.

Members of the Tuskegee Airmen who will be on hand to be honored on Race Day: Lt. Col. James H. Harvey III, Master Sgt. Buford Johnson, Master Sgt. James A. Sheppard, Technical Sgt. George Watson Sr., Lt. Colonel Spann Watson, Second Lt. William M. "Bill" Wheeler, Sgt. Arthur Carter, 1st Sgt. Harry Leavell and Lt. Quentin Smith. Faye McDaniel will represent her late husband, Lt. Col. Armour McDaniel, during the ceremonies.

Another highlight of pre-race ceremonies will be a special flyover of two vintage B-25 Mitchell bombers to honor Disabled American Veterans, the non-profit organization dedicated to helping wounded veterans. The B-25s, named Special Delivery and Take Off Time, are fully restored, World War II-era aircraft. These warbirds will twice pass over the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the national anthem before the beginning of the race.

A new military tribute also has been added to pre-race ceremonies, a Three-Volley Salute. A 10-member firing detail from the Indiana National Guard will execute the military Three-Volley Salute. The members of the Indiana National Guard participating in the Three-Volley Salute are MSG Tony Williams, SGT James Byers, SSG Bruce Bennett, SSG Gary Hatcher, SSG Jerry James and SPC Johnny Everett (Indianapolis), SGT James Vester (Avon), SFC Curtis Pigg (Veedersburg), SGT Charles Henry (Madison) and SPC Craig Cambron (Carmel).

Other patriotic elements paying tribute to America's military during pre-race ceremonies include:

*Parade laps honoring 35 American Wounded Warriors.

*"America the Beautiful" performed by Miss America 2009 Katie Stam, from Indiana

*Speech by U.S. Air Force Gen. Craig McKinley, Chief, National Guard Bureau.

*"God Bless America" performed by Florence Henderson

*"Star Spangled Banner" performed by Major Lisa Kopczynski, Indiana National Guard

*"Taps," performed by a single bugler, Sgt. Joseph Young, National Guard
